About Renewable Energy

Beneficial to the environment, renewable energy is electricity produced from cleaner sources including the sun, wind, and geo-thermal, and biomass.

Traditional methods of electricity generation typically rely on non-renewable fuel sources called fossil fuels. Renewable energy programs help to preserve our natural resources by using renewable fuel sources to generate the electricity to use in your home and in your workplace.

Using renewable resources like the sun also helps preserve our natural environment for future generations by reducing the amounts of air emissions and greenhouse gasses associated with traditional electricity generation methods.

Frequently Asked Questions about Renewable Energy

What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy comes from energy resources that are continuously replenished through the cycles of nature. Unlike fossil fuels, their supply will never become exhausted. The main sources of renewable energy are:

  • the sun (solar energy) and wind
  • moving water (hydropower, wave and tidal energy)
  • heat below the surface of the earth (geothermal energy)
  • biomass (wood, waste, energy crops)

What are the benefits of renewable energy?

  • Renewable energy resources are clean sources of energy. They can be harnessed without damaging the environment, unlike using fossil fuels which release carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) and other harmful pollutants into the atmosphere.
  • Increasing the use of renewable energy is therefore a key strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meeting our energy reduction goals.
  • Renewable energy resources will not become exhausted. Unlike finite fossil fuels, renewable energy resources are continuously replenished and will not run out.
  • Renewable energy resources are indigenous resources. The US is heavily reliant on imported fossil fuels. We now import much of the fuels we need for energy. By tapping the renewable energy resources with which the US is richly endowed, we could reduce this reliance on imports. By increasing our use of renewable resources, we can achieve a more secure and stable energy supply for the long term.

Which renewable energy options are relevant for me?

There are a number of options available to homeowners wishing to go the renewable route. Before investing in a solution a complete HOME ENERGY AUDIT should be performed to insure the most efficient recommendation.

Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 -
Title I - Energy Production Incentives
Subtitle A - Renewable Energy Incentives

Section 104 -
Allows a new energy tax credit for 30% of expenditures for wind turbines used to generate electricity in a residence and for geothermal heat pump systems.

Section 106 -
Extends through 2016 the tax credit for residential energy efficient property. Eliminates the limitation on the tax credit for solar electric property. Allows a residential energy tax credit for 30% of small wind energy and geothermal heat pump property expenditures.
